lauren regan of the civil liberties defense center
has sent out a plea for donations. without financial help, we could lose the cldc.
lauren is one of the most ass-kicking attorneys on the west coast and has given the best lawyers the state of oregon’s d.a’s office some major beat-downs recently. it’s frightening to think about our colllective futures without lauren there for us.
here’s the notice she has sent out…
Dear friends, The protest season is upon us, and here at the CLDC things are getting fired up again in the forests and on the streets--we're defending over 40 activists right now in the criminal courts and suing eugene cops for harassing activists on the streets in civil court, just to name a small part of our current caseload. And of course that doesn't include the 5 Elliot forest defender trials coming up soon in Roseburg, as well as a major restitution hearing (state is seeking $130k in restitution!!), change of pleas and sentencings 23 other defendants. So far the Elliot defenders have contributed enough $$ to pay for the hundred dollar or so discovery bill from the DA's office for DVDs and binders full of papers and reports, and we are very thankful we did not have to pay out of our coffers for that discovery. This contribution did not include funds to cover travel costs or any of my attorney time on behalf of CLDC. Add to this our continued representation of activists being charged with the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, our continued involvement as consulting attys for almost every Green Scare case across the country, and countless trips to activist hotbeds around the country to do trainings and support, you can see that hundreds of activists around the country have come to expect the (free) help of the CLDC when shit hits the fan. Well, we want to be continue to provide that support to the movements we love. But the CLDC has hit hard financial times and I'm concerned we may not be around much longer to provide free legal representation and/or activist advice and resources, so, I'm calling on ya'll to support us as we've tried to support you. If you could organize a house party, a fundraising event, a personal donation, or even volunteer to hang flyers for us it would be extremely helpful right now. If you know people that might support our work, please let us know who they are, or contact kristy, our development director, at kristy@cldc.org and she can give you a fundraising template to send to anyone you may know as well as any other info or materials you might need. Time is of the essence at this point. The CLDC has been in operation for 7 years now and I'd hate to see it end, but if we can't sustain our financial support through those we serve, we are not going to be able to keep it up for much longer. thanks for considering-- lauren The Civil Liberties Defense Center Lauren C.
